The Peer Leader (PL) programPeer Leaders, formerly called Teaching Assistants (TAs), usually junior and senior students, fill an essential role during NSO and in First Year Seminar (FYS) classes. Peer Leaders are trained the week before NSO to work with the new students during NSO. In addition, they enroll in a weekly seminar class and are assigned to work with GSR 101 and 102 instructors. They teach a variety of activities within the class, and serve as mentors, positive role models, and tutors to new students. Fantastic First Year StudentsSince the custom was established in 2002, the University has taken great pride in recognizing its Fantastic First Year students for starting their college careers by demonstrating exemplary study habits, academic achievement, good conduct, community involvement, and supporting other students. However, the 2007-2008 first year students who made the grade stand out in particular, "We received more nominations [from course instructors] than in previous years, and had the highest number of students selected," said Maria Waters, First Year Experience program coordinator. Thirty-eight students met the criteria, and seven of them had perfect 4.0 grade point averages, she said.

The members of this outstanding group of students were nominated by their faculty and academic advisors for demonstrating exceptional commitment to academics. These motivated and dedicated students excelled inside and outside the classroom and earned very high GPAs. Last year, 31 students earned this distinction. On April 13, 2007, these students enjoyed a luncheon and ceremony honoring their work and received a certificate from the FYS faculty. The program also honored Dr. Steven Chough, adjunct professor, with an award for Outstanding First Year Advocate.
